This two-part symposium, sponsored by the ASCRS Research Foundation, will cover all aspects of research in colorectal diseases. In the first part, we brought together surgical leaders to address the challenges and provide guidance in creating an academic research career. In the second part, we will hear from content experts who will highlight the leading edge of colorectal research.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Articulate an overview of the cutting-edge research in informatics, basic science, and clinical trials.
Explain how to transition from a junior to an established investigator. Recognize what to do if you feel like you want to pivot away from research and/or can’t find more funding.
Recognize how changes with the NIH impact faculty performing colorectal research.
Arrange an academic research career by optimizing your faculty appointment for success, and learn what a chair/chief thinks about when hiring a research faculty.
