Surgeons are natural leaders in the operating room, with their patients, and in the community at large. But recently, they are increasingly taking on leadership roles in national organizations, health systems, and academic institutions. In this symposium, three nationally known surgeon-leaders will share their experiences and insights into why surgeons should lead, and how we can continue to improve our organizations and our profession.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Describe emerging leadership roles for colorectal surgeons within certification bodies, academic institutions, and health systems.
Discuss ways in which surgeons can engage with certification bodies to promote cultural change and professional accountability.
Identify key leadership competencies necessary for surgeons to effectively contribute to health system management.
Explain the importance of academic leadership in advancing surgical education, innovation, and institutional success.
