This interactive case-based session will explore contemporary management of rectal cancer, highlighting approaches to early-stage and locally advanced disease, organ preservation strategies, the potential of integrating ctDNA into clinical decision-making, and treatment considerations for patients with stage IV disease.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Review optimal treatment approaches for early-stage rectal cancer, focusing on accurate staging, the role of multidisciplinary care, local excision and total mesorectal excision.
  • Discuss current strategies for neoadjuvant therapy and organ preservation for locally advanced rectal cancer.
  • Summarize management options for patients with stage IV rectal cancer, including resection of the primary, metastasectomy, and the role of systemic and liver-directed therapies within a multidisciplinary framework.
  • Evaluate the role of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in postoperative surveillance and treatment decision-making for patients with rectal cancer.
