Justin A. Maykel, MD
Dr. Maykel is a 1998 graduate of the Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery residency and a clinical fellowship in surgical nutrition/metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. He completed a
colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Medical School.
He has served as the Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA since 2007. His team started a colorectal surgery residency training program in 2012. He holds the Joseph M. Streeter and Mary Streeter DeFeudis Chair in Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Since 2025 he has served as the Medical Director of Perioperative Services at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Through generous philanthropic gifts, he stated two endowed research positions, the Mark Justin Kusek Fellowship in Colorectal Cancer Research (2016) and the Geof and Penelope Booth Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery Research (2025).
Dr. Maykel has served on the editorial board of several journals including Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Journal of Surgical Oncology. He has co-authored two textbooks entitled “Complexities in Colorectal Surgery” and “Clinical Decision Making in Colorectal Surgery”. He is a co-editor for The ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery, 4th edition. He is an active member in the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
Clinical interests include rectal cancer, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, complicated diverticulitis and surgical nutrition. Research interests include innovative surgical approaches to colon and rectal diseases including transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME), transanal minimally invasive surgery including TEM and TAMIS and optimizing surgical quality and outcomes.
