Julia R. Berian is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery at UW-Madison. Dr. Berian completed her medical degree and residency at the University of Chicago, and fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota. She earned a masters in Health Services and Outcomes Research at Northwestern University and completed a research fellowship at the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as the James C. Thompson Geriatric Surgery Research Fellow. During her time at the ACS, she helped build the ACS Geriatric Surgery Verification program for which she currently serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Committee on Geriatric Surgery Verification. She is the Chair of the ASCRS Geriatric Special Interest Group. Dr. Berian leads a health services research lab focused on improving healtchare processes and patient-centered outcomes for older adults. Dr. Berian’s current research uses systems engineering and implementation science to improve preoperative optimization for older adults.
