Grace Thompson is a fifth-year General Surgery Resident Physician at the University of Florida, College of Medicine. During Grace’s intern year of surgical residency, her exposure to surgical oncology and colorectal surgery ignited her passion for the field. She is currently completing her second of two years dedicated to academic development, during which she has worked in the clinical and translational research lab of Dr. Hughes (a leading surgical oncologist at UF) studying the inflammatory milieu present in pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer and how this impacts the progression of pancreas disease. Concurrently, Grace has spent time working with the leading colon and rectal surgeons at UF investigating current and optimal treatment regimens for rectal cancer. In December 2025 she received her Master’s degree in Biomedical Informatics with a focus on the application of statistical and machine learning models in generating prognostic models for pancreatic cancer. After completing her residency, Grace will pursue a career in colorectal surgery, and aims to establish her own research laboratory at an academic institution where she will apply her basic science background and data science knowledge to advance the field of colorectal cancer.
