Harleen Aujla, DO is currently a PGY-3 general surgery resident at Trinity Health Oakland in Pontiac, MI. She went to Indiana University Northwest for her undergraduate studies where she majored in biology. She earned her medical degree from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2023.
Harleen’s undergraduate research interest was in the field of microbiology which included detecting the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria isolated from a regional sewage sample to analyze human-associated bacterial community and how the gut microbiome confers resistance to certain antibiotics based on the antibiotic consumption by the human population.
Harleen has a particular interest in colorectal surgery due to its complex nature of pathology and use of minimally invasive techniques. Her research project involves identifying the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in elective colorectal surgeries at her institution and recognizing ways to decrease the occurrence of SSIs. She is currently conducting a QI project where the use of chlorhexidine gluconate solution is being used in colorectal surgeries to irrigate incisional wounds prior to closure. The goal of this project is to recognize an improvement in the incidence of SSIs in colorectal surgeries. She is also a Resident Champion for Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative and is supporting ongoing QI projects at the institution.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. She likes to do various outdoor activities and always welcomes a challenge with a confident attitude.
