Bryan Szeglin, M.D., is a postgraduate year five Halsted General Surgery Resident and rising administrative chief resident (2027–2028) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. His academic and clinical interests center on improving the care of patients with colorectal cancer through translational science, clinical outcomes research, and innovation in rectal cancer management.
Dr. Szeglin has a longstanding commitment to translational colorectal cancer research. From 2017 to 2021, as both a medical student and dedicated year-long Alpha Omega Alpha Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellow, he was an active member of the J. Joshua Smith Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he helped develop novel rectal cancer organoid models aimed at predicting treatment response to chemotherapy and radiation.
At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Szeglin's translational research interests have expanded as a postdoctoral fellow in the Andrew Ewald Laboratory, where his work focuses on the application of single-cell resolution spatial transcriptomics to better understand the tumor microenvironment in colorectal cancer. His current research investigates microenvironmental features associated with early recurrence after metastasectomy for colorectal liver metastases, as well as biologic features of young-onset rectal cancer.
Clinically at Hopkins, Dr. Szeglin works with Dr. John Migaly on research aimed at improving rectal cancer treatment and surveillance. His interests include radiation regimen selection in total neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced rectal cancer, patient selection for nonoperative management, advanced endoscopic surveillance techniques for patients managed with a watch-and-wait approach, and the application of autonomous surgical robotics in colorectal surgery.
