Loree Thornton, MD is a colorectal surgery fellow at Baylor University Medical Center and is board-certified in general surgery. She completed her general surgery residency at University of South Alabama.
Dr. Thornton began her academic career at Colorado State University, where she earned a B.A. in English and a secondary education teaching license. During this time, she was a standout student-athlete on the women’s track and field team, earning multiple academic honors, setting school and conference records, and winning an NCAA Division I national championship in the hammer throw. She went on to compete professionally, achieving success at national and international levels, and represented the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She also served on the leadership council for USA Track & Field as the Women’s Throws Chair.
Following her athletic career, Dr. Thornton pursued her longstanding goal of becoming a physician. She completed her premedical coursework at University of Colorado Colorado Springs before matriculating at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she held multiple leadership roles, contributed to curriculum reform, and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
During residency, Dr. Thornton was actively involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, medical student education, and development of the SCORE curriculum. She is widely respected for her leadership, teaching, and compassionate patient care.
