He obtained a PhD from Imperial College London where his research on flexible robotics, sensing and Artificial Intelligence was supervised by Lord Ara Darzi at the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery. He completed specialist training in General Surgery training through South-East London Deanery at internationally reputed centres for colorectal surgery namely St Mark’s (The National Bowel Hospital) and St Thomas’ Hospital, London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Following certification (CCT) he secured multiple fellowships in laparoscopic, robotic and endoluminal colorectal surgery. Firstly, a laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and then a RCSEng accredited advanced laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at the John Goligher Colorectal unit in Leeds supervised by Professor Peter Sagar. He later secured a travelling robotic fellowship funded by Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. Towards organ preservation he trained at West China Hospital, China to perform endoluminal surgery to excise precancerous and early cancer of the colon and rectum.
Kunal is the trust’s lead endoscopy trainer and a Royal College of Surgeons of England faculty trainer. His current interests are minimally invasive and organ preservation surgery for colorectal conditions such as cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease. He employs advanced endoscopic techniques to remove complex polyps and treats a variety of proctological conditions using the latest available methods.
