Dr. Carmen Fong earned a Doctor of Medicine from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed a general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2018, after which she completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital/NYU Winthrop. During her training, Dr. Fong won multiple awards, including the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Scholarly Achievement Award twice and the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Chief Resident Award. She is a member of the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where she sits on the Ethics Committee, and a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, where she is on the Young Surgeons Committee and Chair of the Outreach Subcommittee. Her published work has been presented at multiple national and international conferences. Dr. Fong is actively engaged in education, leadership, and volunteer roles in the medical field and beyond. Her clinical work at Mount Sinai included surgical management of colon cancer and anal dysplasia as well as benign anorectal diseases including hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas. Her research interests include colorectal cancer in young people, surgical site infections, and new technological advances in colorectal surgery. Currently, she is Co-Medical Director of Hemorrhoid Centers of America and focuses on outpatient proctology. She writes for KevinMD and reviews articles for Cureus, Surgical Endoscopy, and the American Journal of Surgery. She was recently granted an AWS Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award to take a leadership development course at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. In her free time, Dr. Fong likes to cook, garden, and read, and is the author of the non-fiction book, Constipation Nation (Bloomsbury, 2024).
