Dr. Lynn M. O’Connor is a nationally recognized colorectal surgeon, physician leader, and advocate for health equity. She serves as Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre and St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage, New York, and is also the first Black female Colorectal Police Surgeon for the New York City Police Department.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Dr. O’Connor earned her MPH in Epidemiology and Public Health from Yale University and her medical degree from Temple University. She completed her surgical training at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore and advanced fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery in Atlanta.
Dr. O’Connor is board-certified in both general and colorectal surgery. She has published extensively, serves as a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and is a sought-after national speaker and media contributor on colorectal health. She has been featured in many media outlets including Good Morning America, NBC News, CBS, FOX 5, Sirus/XM, and TodayShow.com
She is a founding member of the Society of Black Colon & Rectal Surgeons and co-founder of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons’ Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Task Force. Her work has focused on expanding access to screening, advancing surgical innovation, and mentoring the next generation of surgeons. Her mission is to provide patients with the foremost treatment, technology and information related to preventative public health issues and colon and rectal health.
In recognition of her leadership and community impact, Dr. O’Connor has received numerous honors and awards, including the 2024 MLK Collegiate Drum Major Award and the 2024 Black Women of Long Island Power Award.
