Shivam Patel, MD, is a Surgical Research Collaborator at Kern Medical, where he also contributes to simulation lab support and physician support and onboarding initiatives. He earned his BS in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, and graduated with High Honors from Ross University School of Medicine. His academic interests include colorectal surgery, trauma and critical care, surgical outcomes research, surgical education, and complex operative decision-making.
At the ASCRS Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr. Patel is presenting “Out of Navel Necessity: Utilizing an Umbilical Hernia Site for Stoma Creation in a Morbidly Obese Patient.” His presentation highlights a pragmatic approach to ostomy creation in a high-risk surgical patient, emphasizing individualized stoma site selection, abdominal wall considerations, and patient-centered surgical planning. Through his clinical research and simulation-related work, he is interested in improving perioperative decision-making, surgical training, and outcomes for patients requiring complex abdominal operations.
