Originally from Fairfield, CT, Dr. Bennett completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT where he was a member and captain of the Division I baseball team. He subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Physiology & Biophysics at Georgetown University before earning his M.D. from SUNY Buffalo, receiving honors in research.
Dr. Bennett completed his General Surgery training at the University of South Florida where he was twice named Outstanding Resident of the Year and served as Administrative Chief Resident. He then joined the University of Louisville where he completed his fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery, gaining extensive experience in robotic surgery, and complex surgical management of IBD and colorectal malignancies.
Dr. Bennett is double board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery and currently serves as Associate Professor in the USF Department of Surgery. His research has been recognized with two prestigious awards; the John A. Mannick Harvard University Resident Research Award and the Larry Carey USF Surgery Resident Research Award. He has authored numerous peer reviewed articles and book chapters and serves on national committees related to robotics, colorectal surgery, and IBD. He currently serves as Associate Program Director for the General Surgery residency program at USF, Director of the Jacobsen endowed research fellowship in Colon & Rectal Surgery, and Vice Chief of Surgery at Tampa General Hospital. He is also section editor of Colorectal Surgery for Current Surgical Reports. He was recently inducted into the Society of University Surgeons.
Dr. Bennett’s clinical and research interests are focused primarily on IBD, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer, and minimally invasive surgery. He has served as PI for multiple clinical trials and is also active in clinical outcomes research.
