Dr. Juan Antonio Villanueva-Herrero is a board-certified general and colorectal surgeon with more than 20 years of clinical, academic, and research experience devoted to diseases of the colon, rectum, anus, and pelvic floor. He holds current certifications in both General Surgery and Coloproctology, and serves as a formative professor of new specialists at one of Latin America's leading referral centers.
As founder and Head of the Anorectal Physiology Unit of the Coloproctology Service at Hospital General de México "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga" in Mexico City — established under his direction in 2014 — Dr. Villanueva leads one of the highest-volume referral centers of its kind in Latin America. The Unit performs more than 1,000 specialized studies per year, including high-resolution anorectal manometry, endoanal and transperineal (dynamic) ultrasound and pudendal nerve assessment, and supports a University-accredited (UNAM) postgraduate diploma program in Anorectal Physiology and Posterior Pelvic Floor, through which he has trained and mentored specialists from across the region.
He also serves as Coordinator of the Complex Anal Fistula Clinic, a dedicated multidisciplinary program for the evaluation and surgical management of recurrent, high, and Crohn's-related fistulas, integrating advanced imaging with sphincter-sparing techniques.
Dr. Villanueva serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Revista Mexicana de Cirugía Colorrectal, Coordinator of the Exam Committee of the Mexican Board of Colorectal Specialists, member of the Pelvic Floor Committee 2026-2028 of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, member of the Bowel Dysfunction (Fecal Incontinence) Committee of the International Continence Society, and member of the Scientific Committee of the Latin American Pelvic Floor Association (ALAPP). He has contributed to multiple Mexican national Clinical Practice Guidelines, advised international trials and authored more than 1,100 scholarly citations in the field.
