Ashley Ostler Toussaint, DO is a general surgery resident at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she serves as Resident Ombudsmen, rising Administrative Chief Resident and Director of Resident Wellness. She is expected to complete her training in 2027 and plans to pursue fellowship training in colorectal surgery.
Dr. Toussaint earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated summa cum laude from Southern Utah University, where she was a Division I collegiate softball pitcher.
Her clinical and academic interests center on colorectal surgery, including minimally invasive techniques, complex abdominal wall and pelvic reconstruction, and management of colorectal malignancy and benign disease. She has contributed to colorectal-focused research and presentations on topics such as colovesical fistula management, early Foley catheter removal protocols, robotic colectomy following neoadjuvant therapy, and operative management of retrorectal pathology and perineal hernia repair.
In addition to her research, Dr. Toussaint is deeply committed to surgical education and resident wellbeing. She has led the development and implementation of wellness initiatives for both residents and faculty, focusing on leadership, mental health, resilience, and sustainable training environments. Her efforts to improve the culture of surgical training have been recognized with the Rutgers Health GME Professionalism Award.
Her combined interests in colorectal surgery, surgical education, and trainee wellbeing position her to contribute meaningfully to the field as a future colorectal surgeon.
