Dr. Hyman retired from clinical practice in 2023 as Professor of Surgery and Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine. He is Professor of Surgery Emeritus at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed original articles or textbook chapters.

He has served as President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Director of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and as Associate Editor of the Annals of Surgery and Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
